Annual General Meeting, GAC Structural Geology and Tectonics Division

GAC/MAC/SEG Conference, Vancouver, May 28, 2003

Attendees (19):

Joeseph Clancy White (Chairman), Sharon Carr, Steve Israel, Phil Simony, Ron Clowes, Dan Gibson, Larry Lane, Carol Evanchick, Jim Ryan, Andrew Okulitch (Treasurer), Maurice Colpron, John Waldron, Yvette Kuiper, Lori Kennedy, Bruno LaFrance, Shoufa Lin, Stefan Kruse, Normand Goulet, Dennis Johnston (acting as secretary for absent Jurgen Kraus).

Moved by Joe White that minutes of the last meeting as posted on the SGTD website be accepted, seconded Phil Simony and Sharon Carr, carried with no objections.

Financial Statement reviewed by Andrew Okulitch: ~$7500 in bank, no major outstanding payables. Andrew proposed the following options to utilize funds: increase amount of prizes for best theses, subsidize students on field trips, T-shirts, advertising SGTD, invest in term deposit. Moved by Sharon Carr that Financial Statements be accepted as presented and that Andrew can invest money in term deposit, seconded Larry Lane, carried with no objections.

Joe White raised subject of filling the executive position of Vice-Chairman as dictated by GAC constitution. Vice-Chair would automatically assume position of Chairman after the 3-year term of the Chair position transpires. Moved by Sharon Carr, seconded Phil Simony, that Joe White be enabled to look for someone for this position, carried with no objections.

Joe White to discuss with councilors: how papers will be reviewed, expanding the scope of papers covered, increasing the number of councilors, and the need to define the 12 month period being covered (move to calendar year coverage?).

Shoufa Lin asked that SGTD sponsor a special session being convened by Fried Schwerdner, Sandy Cruden and Shoufa Lin at the 2004 St. CatharinesŐ GACMAC. Moved by Larry Lane that SGTD sponsor the session, seconded by Sharon Carr, carried with no objections. Other sessions that people are seeking SGTD sponsorship for will be posted on the website for comments. Chris White is also already seeking ideas for 2005 Halifax GACMAC. John Waldron is putting together a strike-slip field trip together that will be associated with a session; John may collaborate with Joe White on this fieldtrip. Please cc Joe White if anyone from our group puts forward other session or field trip ideas to Chris White.

A general discussion on how to spend our surplus funds ensued. Moved by John Waldon, seconded by Carol Evanchick, that for a one year trial period the SGTD pay best Ph.D. and M.Sc. studentsŐ GACMAC registration fees and awards luncheon fees and students give talks or posters on their work; motion was carried with no objections. Feasibility of this plan to be reviewed at next AGM.

Shoufa Lin informed group that Fall 2003 CTG meeting will be Oct 18th weekend in Parry Sound and the field trip will be lead by Nick Culshaw.

Sharon Carr informed group that there will be a conference in honour of Phil Simony in June 2004 at the University of Calgary. Conference will have a structural focus, talks will run Thursday through Sunday AM and field trip lead by Sharon and Phil will leave Sunday PM. Registration dates, etc will come out this July. Please forward any ideas, themes, titles, etc to Sharon or Leslie Reid (at U of C). Joe will pursue arranging CTG endorsement for this conference and send out same with Shoufa LinŐs notice for the Fall 2003 CTG meeting. Lithoprobe is having their windup meeting Oct 13 2004. Since this timing would present a serious conflict with the 2004 Fall CTG meeting, there was discussion by the group about the possibility of the 2004 CTG meeting coinciding with the Phil Simony conference.

Please forward any ideas for Montreal 2006 GACMAC meeting to Normand Goulet.

Jim Ryan enquired as to the status of the Structural Atlas. Sandy Cruden relayed to Joe White that it has been delayed owing to the quality of submissions being low and Sandy is busy with other more pressing matters.

Moved Phil Simony, seconded John Waldron, to adjourn; carried with no objections.
