21th Canadian Tectonics Group Workshop, October 27-28, 2001, Sudbury, Ont.

Please indicate to Bruno Lafrance if you plan to attend. His contact information is given at
the end of his outline of the meeting, which follows. The Canadian Tectonic Group meeting is being held in Sudbury on Saturday, October 27th, and Sunday, October 28th, 2001. Sudbury is
located at driving distances from Toronto (4-5 hours), Ottawa (7 hours), Montreal (8-9 hours), and Fredericton (18 hours for UNB students). Because of Sudbury's central location, we expect the meeting to be very
well attended. This meeting is an excellent opportunity for all to catch up on current structural research in Canada, and for graduate students to meet all members of the Canadian structural community. We invite all geologists interested in structural geology, and especially graduate students, to the meeting.

The first day of the meeting will be devoted to posters and talks on structural topics, ranging from experimental and computer modeling studies to tectonic and field studies. During the second day of the meeting, Dr. John Spray (University of New Brunswick) will lead a field trip across the Sudbury impact structure. John Spray and his students have proposed interesting new ideas on the evolution of the Sudbury meteoritic impact structure. Impact-related pseudotachylites, faults, breccias, and shatter cones will be examined during the trip.

STRUCTURAL ATLAS PROJECT
Here is an abbreviated update from Sandy Cruden (May 23, 2001): I have received submissions from 17 people plus offers of what is already present on web sites from another 2 people. These submissions ranged from one image to sets of up to 20 or so images and/or maps. Not having counted all of the images yet, my guess is that we
have around 100 images to work with at present.Based on my preliminary scan of the submissions, I can report that we are heavy on kinematic indicators (why am I surprised?) and light on general structures (folds, faults, fractures, fabrics) and ore-deposits specific material (i.e. timing relationships, vein and breccia types, etc.).Submissions are still welcome and will be for quite some time.

CALL FOR NEW EXECUTIVE

Finally, Larry, Andy and I have decided to make way for new blood so we are searching for a new executive. It seems to work well if a team from one location volunteers together. Please give this some consideration before the Fall meeting in Sudbury so that we can elect or acclaim a new executive at the meeting. Andy has volunteered
to stay on if need be.

Cheers,

Larry Lane, Andy Okulitch and Dennis Johnston.
