Hello out there in Structure and Tectonics land. Yes, the Division Executive is still alive and breathing without any artificial aid or medication, and to prove it, we are publishing this newsletter. We are also rapidly approaching the 3rd anniversary of this Executive's term, and a new one will likely be nominated, elected, and thrust (no pun, honest) into the limelight at the CTG meeting in October. Let's talk.
ABM Victoria '95
The Annual Business Meeting of the SGTD was held at Victoria '95, and was chaired by Cees van Staal. Several items were discussed at the meeting, including the appointment of a new Executive. Surprisingly, Cees was unable to incite any of the six or so members present at the meeting to jump from their seats and volunteer for the job. Given the lack of any spontaneous offers to fill the soon-to-be-vacant positions of Chair, Treasurer, and Secretary, the present Executive has decided to follow the proceedure which led to their own nomination; that is, a phone call at the time you least expect it, from someone you know and respect (well, someone you know) informing you that your time has come, and laying an enormous guilt trip on you if you should try to worm out of the job. We are happy to announce that this most democratic of all approaches has in fact been implemented, and the new Executive will be introduced at the CTG meeting in October.
Also discussed at the ABM were the results of the vote (dare I use the R word?) on the naming of the Division medal. Votes were accepted by paper ballot, provided in the last Main Thrust, and by email. Stayed tuned for the results following these brief messages ...
CTG MEETING '95
The next meeting of the CTG will be held in Rawdon, some 70 km to the north of Montreal, in the vicinity of the Morin Anorthosite, from October 13 to 15. We will be staying at the Hotel Tournesol (Tel: (514) 843 5411). Saturday the 14th will be devoted to oral presentations and posters. Sunday morning we will examine a series of high-temperature mylonites of the Morin anorthosite complex.
A registration form has been circulated by email, and a hard copy can be found at the end of this newsletter. Price including room for Friday and Saturday nights, 3 meals on Saturday, breakfast and lunch Sunday, book of abstracts and field guide will be $140, with partial refund for students from western Canada. The deadline for abstract submission is October 2.
BEST STUDENT ABSTRACT
We received zero (0) submissions for the Best Student GAC Abstract prize this year. This may be partly due a lower-key publicity campaign this year, as compared to 1994, and for this the Secretary begs a thousand times pardon. I will take it upon myself to warn the new Executive of the dangers of complacency.
SUBMISSIONS FOR AWARDS
The SGTD's inestimably prestigious Best Paper award is given for the best paper of the year by Canadian authors, or dealing with Canadian structural geology and tectonics. The winning paper is chosen by the Division Executive from short lists of papers submitted by the Division Councilors.
Our Councilors select papers eligible for the Best Paper prize that appear in eight journals: CJES, Tectonophysics, Tectonics, GSA Bulletin, Geology, CSPG Bulletin, JGR, and the Journal of Structural Geology. For the coming year, if anyone is aware of a great paper that appears in another journal, or as a chapter in a book, please send three copies to the executive with a note pointing out the particular strengths of the work. The deadline for submissions is October 6.
The SGTD also sponsors a Best Thesis prize. We rely on thesis supervisors for submittal of theses which have been definitively accepted since the previous autumn. The deadline for submissions is October 6.
Both the Best Paper and Best Thesis awards will be announced at the CTG meeting.
THE ELLIOTT MEDAL
Welcome back. And now, here are the results of voting for the name of the new Best Paper medal, which we hope will be awarded for the first time in 1996.
Proposed Name No. of Votes Adams 5 Elliott 12 Adams - Elliott 2 Fairbairn 1
The promoters of the Elliott Medal have clearly won a decisive democratic victory, by a margin significantly greater than 50% + 1.
GAC-MAC SPECIAL SESSIONS AND SYMPOSIA
The SGTD will sponsor a Special Session at Winnipeg '96 (27-29 May). The session is being organized by Colleen Elliott and Stephen Kumarapelli of Concordia University, and will be entitled "Reactivated Basement Structures: Recognition, Dating, Significance". A flyer was circulated by the organizers in July of 1995. If you are interested in participating, get in touch with Colleen and Stephen as soon as possible at: colleen@vax2.concordia.ca. Abstract dealine December 1, 1995.
Sandy Cruden, Ed Sawyer and Keith Benn will be organizing a symposium for Ottawa '97, entitled "Extraction, Transport and Emplacement of Granitic Magmas: Structural, Tectonic, and Geophysical Aspects". This will mark the 50th anniversary of an ealier symposium on "The Origin of Granite", which was held at the 1947 GSA meeting, in Ottawa, and during which papers were presented by such notables as H.H. Read and N.L. Bowen. Sponsorship of the symposium by the SGTD will be discussed at the CTG meeting in Rawdon.

UPDATES
This section was introduced to the Main Thrust to keep everyone up to date on news of importance to the Canadian Structural Geology and Tectonics community. Please do not hesitate to let us know of any news from your department, discipline, province, nation, or sovereign entity ... it's so easy on the Internet!
CLOSING REMARKS
As you have noticed, the Main Thrust currently serves to keep the SGTD membership informed of meetings, finances, prizes awarded, and thesis / post-doc opportunities. Do not hesitate to also use it as a forum for your ideas. If you have something to say to colleagues across the country, send us an email and request that it be included in the Main Thrust.
To finish up, another reminder about the Division's very own link to the information superhighway. By sending an email message to CTG@spartan.ac.brocku.ca, it will be redistributed to all those who are on the SGTD emailing list set up at Brock University. If you wish to be included on this list (of course you do!) send your name and email address to Frank Fueten (ffueten@spartan.ac.brocku.ca).
Any comments, suggestions or questions for the Executive are, as always, welcome.
