Business
Meeting, GAC Structural Geology and Tectonics Division, CTG Fall Meeting, Parry
Sound, ON, 25th Oct. 2003
Attendees (21): James Bradley, Sandrine CadŽron, Ivan Dimitrov, Frank Fueten, Normand Goulet, Yvette Kuiper, JŸrgen Kraus (secretary), Stefan Kruse, Bruno Lafrance, Francois Leclerc, Yvon Lemieux, Shoufa Lin (acting as chairperson for the absent Joe White), Clara Ma, Paula MacKinnon, Paul McNeill, Guido Sarafini, Fried Schwerdtner, Philip Simony, Bob Stesky, John Waldron, Paul Williams.
Shoufa Lin delivered a message from chairman Joe White, who excused his absence. He brought back to memory that it had been decided at the previous business meeting during GAC/MAC 2003 in Vancouver that, from now on, the SGTDÕs annual awards are announced at the GAC/MAC luncheon and that the prizes are awarded per calendar year.
Another point, Joe White wanted to be discussed was, whether a meeting in Calgary in the honour of Phil Simony, announced to take place June 17 Ð 20, 2004, should become next yearÕs CTG meeting, or whether it should be organized by the University of Calgary as planned. The main discussion point here was the potential inconvenience of timing during the summer field season. The alternative would be two meetings in the honour of Phil: the one in June and the CTG fall meeting in October. The latter would be organised by UNBÕs Paul McNeill in New Brunswick somewhere north of Fredericton (while no decision had been made on the field trip).
Normand Goulet asked for the balance of the current budget, which is approximately $7500.
JŸrgen Kraus mentioned that the prizes for best theses/paper had not been raised in at least 10 years and asked whether they had been increased after the Vancouver business meeting (increase was carried without objections at the Vancouver meeting, but no new figures are known). After some discussion, there was no clear answer on the new amounts.
There was a busy discussion on the timing of the 2004 CTG meeting: in Calgary in June or in NB in October? Fried Schwerdtner was convincingly in favour of not deviating from alternating between western, central, and eastern Canada. It was voted and the decision was unanimous in favour of the NB fall meeting, which will be also in the honour of Philip Simony.
JŸrgen Kraus referred to the great success of CTG T-shirts designed in the late 1980s and wondered whether there was interest in a re-design. While this was received with great interest, it was also pointed out that it is not the CTG that has the money to advance the cost for such shirts but the SGTD. If this should go ahead, the SGTD logo has to be on the T-shirt. The executive will look into a solution.
Normand Goulet brought up the issue of planning the GAC/MAC 2006 in Montreal and Frank Fueten suggested to make a special call for symposia and papers for Montreal 2006.
Normand Goulet and Paul Williams asked what to do with the budget and to generally spend more money. There was general consensus and discussion followed whether to sponsor studentsÕ GAC/MAC travel and registration, CTG travel, etc. Stefan Kruse and JŸrgen Kraus argued that this would support the supervisor rather than the student (same point was discussed at the business meeting at GAC/MAC Edmonton 1993 without result). Paul Williams suggested to give support to students for a conference of their choice, and this found general approval.
Paula MacKinnon proposed to do gain a bigger public outreach for the SGTD (and CTG) by advertising the group and raising the profile of its conferences, which was well received. As a start, Paula asked JŸrgen Kraus to write a brief report on the Parry Sound meeting (with picture) for the ÔGeologÕ newsmagazine.
