George Sand was the pseudonym of Amadine Aurore Lucile Dupen Dudevant (1804-1876), French novelist and social non-conformist. She sometimes wore male clothing and was an acquaintance of the novelist Balzac as well as intimate companion to the composer Chopin. Her many works include Indiana (1832), Consuelo (1842), La Petite Fadette (1849), and Mlle. de Quintinie (1863).
