The Brock/Trent/McMaster Study Year in Freiburg program

This year, the program celebrates its 15th year of successful operation. In 1993, Brock University and Trent University, the founding partner institutions, invited McMaster University to join our undertaking abroad on site at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg in southern Germany. Brock University, however, maintains a majority interest in the Stu dy Year pro gram. As a result, a faculty member from the German section, Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies assumes the responsibilities of Resident Director on site in Germany every second year. While this year abroad may at first seem enviable to many, it is in fact a position with many responsibilities, for the Resident Director is not only a professor in Freiburg, (s)he is also the on-site Registrar, Counsellor, Bursar, Admissions Officer, Liaison Officer at the inter-university level and with the Canad ian Embassy, as well as departmental secretary.

The Brock/Trent/McMaster Study Year in Freiburg is a true exchange program, in that there is a flow of students to and from each country. In September 1994, Brock University welcomed 14 students from Germany. Eleven students are from the former West Germany and three are from the former German Democratic Republic. Integration into Canadian student life has been achieved with no difficulty. In fact, one student received special dispensation from Freiburg to return for a second y ear in Canada, so that he could complete a degree at Brock. Mr. Thomas Hanser, now officially a Brock transfer student, won $2,000 in scholarships for his past year's work, including the prestigious 25th Anniversary Scholarship for Best Student in the Social Sciences.

The Resident Director in Freiburg for 1994-1995 is Prof. Fritz Widmaier, a colleague from McMaster University. Twelve Brock students are currently studying in Germany with Prof. Widmaier. Together with the contingents sent from Trent and McMaster, the p rogram participants number 25, the usual number. They are enrolled in courses not only with the Resident Director, but also in the various faculties of the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg itself.

In 1995-1996, Prof. Barry Joe of Brock's Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies will be the Resident Director on site.

For further information or for application forms, please contact the secretary of the Department, Mrs. Bodil Little.

The Ontario/Baden Württemberg Program

Brock accepted one student in September 1994 under the terms of the Ontario/Baden-Württemberg Exchange program, an Ontario Government sponsored program for which Prof. Herb Schutz of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies is the contact .

Third Year in France Program

Since the 1992-1993 academic year, French majors at Brock have had the opportunity to study at the University of Perpignan in the southwest part of France. This program is a joint venture administered by the Universi ty of Winnipeg and Brock University. Every year, a director designated by the two Canadian institutions accompanies his/her students to France, to teach two of their five courses in the program and to act as a liaison between them and the French academic administration. As per an agreement, Brock has provided the resident director since that time -- Professors Leonard Rosmarin, Jane Koustas, and Dennis Essar (who is now on site). The number of student participants from both univeersities has usu ally been 15-20 students.

Situated in a picturesque and culturally-rich area of France, Perpignan is only 13 kilometres from the Mediterranean Sea and 30 kilometres from the Spanish border. Participants have the option of staying in residence with regular French students or spend ing the year with a local family.

All students enrolled in the program are required to take a full-year course on French civilization as well as two half-courses on critical methodology and textual analysis, taught by the resident director. The other three courses are selected under the guidance of the resident director from the University of Perpignan's curriculum. Students who have successfully completed their third year of study normally return to Brock for their honors year.

Summer Studies in Italy

The Italian section of the Department of French, Italian and Spanish is also involved in the Summer Studies in Italy Program in collaboration with York University. The partnership is now in its fifth year. Brock and York students spend either three or six weeks in Florence and Rome where they take language, literature and culture courses.

Archaeology in Cyprus

The Department of Classics is again offering its Archaeological Practicum in Cyprus. The practicum will run under the aegis of the University of Arizona Expedition to Idalion and will include practical instruction in archaeological survey and excavation, as well as field trips to museums and sites in Cyprus. The practicum runs from July 3 through August 14, 1995; students will work on the Classical and Hellenistic sanctuary of Adonis at the city-kingdom site of Idalion in Dhali, Cyprus.
