About the City of Freiburg

Albert-Ludwigs-Universität was founded in 1457 by the Habsburg Archduke Albrecht VI. The Brock/Trent/McMaster Study Year in Freiburg offers you the opportunity to participate in the academic life of this venerable institution where students from around the world come together to exchange ideas and to share in the quest for higher learning.

Freiburg is a beautiful city situated on the edge of the Black Forest in southwestern Germany. Dominated by the Gothic cathedral with its magnificent spire , the town reflects an architectural heritage which begins in the Middle Ages and culminates in our own era. France and Switzerland lie just over the borders to the west and the south.

The Brock/Trent/McMaster Programme has as its goal the development of language proficiency through the study of both German language and literature. Classes are offered by both the Canadian Resident Director and by German instructors from the University of Freiburg. But life does not consist of classes alone: students will be given the opportunity to participate in the many cultural events in the city and the university.

Our programme in Freiburg begins in early September with immersion classes designed to bridge the gap between Canada and Germany. During this time you will get to know the city itself as well as some of its landmarks and places of interest. A short few days in a Black Forest house will highlight the early weeks of our sojourn in Freiburg. With the opening of term in mid-October, classes begin in earnest. Students enrolled in the programme may take the equivalent of five full courses, selecting from a wide variety of offerings from both the resident director and the instructors of the University of Freiburg. It is likely that most students will want to pursue their German studies, but it is also possible to take courses in virtually any other area offered by the university, provided, of course, that language is not a barrier to a fruitful pursuit of these areas.
