from the Perspective of Competitive Advantage

[NASA Logo] Design for operability takes into consideration the needs of the operators and users of the product or system. If the system costs too much, the users cannot afford the system. If the system is troublesome or dangerous to operate, then the system has little value for the user. Thus a competitive system must have a reasonable operational cost and an appropriate operational value.

Concurrent Engineering can use multidisciplinary optimization, response surface methodology, or Taguchi methods can be used to optimize cost or value The king of tools for designing for operability is quality function deployment or QFD.
