CANADA 2010
National Conference
OCTOBER 21-23

Welcome to Lyric Canada!

update: LyricCanada2010 has completed three days of splendid and provocative presentations. Your conference organizers wish you safe journeys for the return to your abodes across Canada, the United States, and in the United Kingdom. We are blessed to have made new acquaintances and colleagues, and renewed those friendships from many years back. Soon we will post some pictures from the sessions, and we look forward to collaborating with you again.

In the immediate future we ask that you contribute your presentations to the online journal edition of The Brock Review dedicated to the conference and its theme. You may submit your presentations as you delivered them during the conference or perhaps take the time to rework your ideas following the inspiration of any feedback you received during your time with us. The journal is seeking submissions of different styles and approaches - they need not be of an 'academic' nature, for example, and we look forward to including multimedia content. We are also contributing articles about your presentations and the trends and ideas revealed during the conference. The closing date for submissions is November 15. Please encourage colleagues who were not at the conference to also make submissions. The Call for Papers is found on the Call for Papers page.

Until soon, your colleagues and conference hosts, Virginia and David.

Mission Statement:

Lyric Canada 2010 is an inaugural international conference, bringing together creators of lyric theatre in Canada and abroad with academics whose research does or could encompass their work. In this context the term "lyric theatre" encompasses a wide range of dramatic works in which sung text is an integral part. Thus it includes cabaret, musicals, operetta, opera and all points in between. A special component of the conference program will be the presentation of new and recent works in the Lyric CANADA 2010 Showcase. By uniting a transnational group of researchers and creators of lyric theatre, we intend to develop a network from which to draw inspiration, expertise and experience for anyone pursuing research or production of this unique art form.

Our goals for this conference are as dynamic as the form itself. Principally they will revolve around creative exploration, public awareness and the advancement of academic research:

> to create new bridges between the academic and performance worlds
> to legitimize to the study of lyric theatre, particularly music theatre in university environments
> to enhance the status of existing programs of study in lyric theatre
> to create bridges between musical theatre and opera
> to explore existing cross-over areas of lyric theatre
> to enhance cross-over areas of lyric theatre
> to share the challenges of creating and producing these complex performance forms
> to open a dialogue in lyric theatre across Canada
> after this initial gathering, to assess ongoing and future communication, collaboration, development

Ultimately we intend:

> to promote and enhance the creation, preservation and study of lyric theatre in Canada
> to promote Canadian lyric theatre to the Canadian public
> to give visibility to Canadian lyric theatre outside of Canada
> to enhance the funding of lyric theatre in Canada
