CTG Fall Meeting 2004 in the Honour of Philip Simony in Saint John, New Brunswick, 22-24 October 2004
   
        This year's fall meeting of the Canadian Tectonics Group will be held in Saint John, New Brunswick, from Friday night (22 Oct) until Sunday evening (24 Oct). The field trip on Sunday will focus on Carboniferous basins.

Conference and Field Trip in the Honour of Philip Simony in Calgary, June 2004
   
        The Department of Geology and Geophysics of the University of Calgary hosts a conference and field trip "From Forelands to Core Zones: Deformation and Tectonic Evolution of Orogenic Belts" in the honour of Phil Simony, who retired recently. The conference will take place 17-20 June, followed by a field trip from Calgary to the Valhalla Complex in B.C., 21-23 June 2004. Details can be found on the U of C website.


Report on the CTG Fall Meeting 2003, Parry Sound, Ontario
   
          The 23rd annual meeting with field trip was held at Resort Tapatoo, Parry Sound, ON, 24-26th Oct. 2003. It was excellently organized by Shoufa Lin and the enjoyable field trip into the Central Gneiss Belt of the Grenville Province was led by Nick Culshaw.

The Philip Simony Movie

        This 30-second clip captures Philip Simony, Professor Emeritus at the University of Calgary, explaining the distribution of Mississippian rocks along the hinge of the Heart Mountain syncline at Exshaw, Rocky Mountains Front Ranges. Phil led a group of CSPG structural geologists to the Front Ranges on 5th Oct. 2002.

Shaojeng Ji's New Books
 
        CTG member Shaojeng Ji of Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal has first-authored two books recently. 'Rheology of Earth Minerals' is co-authored by Bin Xia, the 'Handbook of Seismic Properties of Minerals, Rocks and Ores' is co-authored by Qin Wang and Bin Xia.
